He never wanted to retire. He knows his legacy takes a hit if he doesn't.

He had just signed the #1/#2 class in the country and a stacked roster that according to all the websites was the most talented in the nation.

Exactly how was NIL something Saban couldn’t navigate?

No, as he himself made very clear, he just didn’t like what the game had become and decided to call it a career in his 70s leaving while he was still competing at an ultra elite level (SEC champ, CFP OT loss, etc).

Those advantages didn’t do a hell of a lot for the six Bama coaches from 1983-2006.
