I don't think that is it at all.

Here is what I heard. I have no personal knowledge to know if this is all true, partially true or completely false. Beard's long time girlfriend was a known nut-job. They had a very volatile relationship for years. The story is she had been fired from her own coaching job in Lubbock (I think volleyball, but maybe girl's basketball) for yanking a student athlete off the court by pulling her ponytail. She had been physically abusive to Beard multiple times. While at Texas, she did some VERY inappropriate things on a team road trip (I think to NYC) that led to Beard sleeping in a different bedroom. Tensions were high, she went at him again and Beard finally snapped. Apparently, decision makers at Texas knew about the crazy girlfriend and still moved forward with Beard, even though they knew he would bring her from Lubbock to Austin. They had to cut Beard loose to address their own error in judgment.
