Were break away jerseys a thing yet in the 80s?

Dude, they were called "tearaway" jerseys and they were an early '70s thing. And they were on their way out in the '80s because dudes were either running around out there with shoulder pads and a few shreds from their uniform flying around... or they were on the sidelines frantically changing into a new jersey every series.

The '80s was the time period of the "see through" mesh jersey accompanied by the giant shoulder pads.

Neck rolls and cowboy collars (along with the big shoulder pads) took over '90s fashions as the '90s as jerseys with any kind of holes in them went away.

What I miss from the '80s was all the dudes wearing towels stuffed in their pants with messages on them.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but Bear Bryant used to have his o-lineman stuff replacement tear-away jerseys of skill position players in their pants so that a player could put a new one on in the huddle and not have to leave the game for a play.
