UGA and Bama had elite talent across the board (UGA/OSU/Bama are the only teams with that high level of talent currently).

Back before Saban started bringing in #1 classes over and over again at Bama, LSU was in the top tier of talent in college football so could use the "talent across the board but not elite QB" method. Bama has since upped the top tier of talent and LSU didn't up their recruiting game to stay with them. Only UGA and OSU did (and even then for OSU it took a few years to catch up with Bama. It took UGA longer until Smart had been there for 4-5 years).
