Michigan and Washington State did pretty good shutting down the offense.

Some offenses torched Nick Saban’s defense occasionally, too. No coach or scheme is perfect.

No matter how good the coaching and the coach-ability of the players, football is still a full-contact sport. Sometimes your players get their asses whipped and their ain't shite scheme can do about it.

Washington ran into a physical inability problem v. Michigan. They have a well-coached OL but a lot of their success in pass protection is about the credible threat of the run game. Their run scheme is built to discourage aggressive play from the DL with inside/outsize zone + counters. Washington's lack of depth at tailback diminished the credibility of their run game and their smaller interior OL got whipped by one of the better interior DLs in recent college football history.

No amount of coaching is going to get around roster deficits. Why do you think DeBoer jumped at the opportunity to coach somewhere that will almost always have fewer roster management issues?

This all the way. The Michigan front 7 vs. the Washington OL was a mismatch. Washington's OL last year was good. Michigan's physicality, talent, and experience last year in their front 7 was elite. It was not unlike Alabama front 7's from about 2009-2012.
