McCarron was a great QB, but he had all kinds of muscle on the roster with him back when physical dominance was a bigger part of the game.

I mean, from 2010 onwards Alabama QBs enjoyed a plethora of offensive talent the likes of which had never been seen before in the history of our program. Just look at how talented the 2018 Alabama roster was on the offensive side of the football when Tua was the starter:

Tua Tagovailoa (1st round pick)
Mac Jones (1st round pick)
Josh Jacobs (1st round pick)
Najee Harris (1st round pick)
Jerry Jeudy (1st round pick)
Henry Ruggs III (1st round pick)
DeVonta Smith (1st round pick)
Jaylen Waddle (1st round pick)
Alex Leatherwood (1st round pick)
Jonah Williams (1st round pick)
Jedrick Wills (1st round pick)
Jalen Hurts (2nd round pick)
Irv Smith Jr. (2nd round pick)
Damien Harris (3rd round pick)
Jerome Ford (5th round pick)
Ross Pierschbacher (5th round pick)
Deonte Brown (6th round pick)

I think winning the 2011 and 2012 national titles required less of the QB than the 2009, 2015, and 2017 national titles. The 2011 and 2012 teams played in an era when being physically overpowering was a bigger part of the game.

Later Alabama championship teams may have had better receivers, but they also faced better offenses and were pressured to score more with the passing game.

I think there's a reason why McCarron was drafted in the fifth round and has been a journeyman backup - while Tua, Hurts, Mac, and Young are 1-2 round draft picks and established starters.
