If Baker's buyout is 950k, and the contracts is 3 yrs at 2.5m per, it means LSU bid 8.45m for 3 years of Baker. He is likely there only 1 or 2 years. If he is great, he will get a good HC offer after 1 or 2. And if he doesn't make major strides on their defense, he probably isn't retained 3 years.
So LSU is likely either paying 3.45m for 1 year or 5.95m for 2 years of Baker.
Mizzou felt reasonably safe that paying Baker 2.2m per for 3 years (I think) with that buyout would be safe.
This is part of why Mizzou's endowment is larger than LSU's.

LSU is also paying the buyout of their last DC and his staff for $5.4 million.
With the buyouts, salary, and staff pay LSU is probably paying $12 to $13 million over the next 2 years.
If Baker only stays 1 year it is a really bad investment. The only way this is a good investment for LSU is a NC and at the very least a final 4. They have the talent and are paying big NIL money for it.
Miss the playoff over the next 2 years Kelly and Baker are on the hot seat. NIL money will start to go down a little.
