Two Alabama entities are listed on the Fortune 500, which ranks the nation's largest publicly held corporations. Regions Financial Corp. (NYSE: RF), which again made the list at No. 483, is joined by Vulcan Materials Co. at 494

In fairness to the state of Alabama, the blitz of bank mergers in the 2000s, an accounting scandal, and consolidation in the healthcare industry cost Alabama a lot of Fortune 500 headquarters back in the 2000s.

20 years ago Birmingham, along with Omaha, Nebraska had the highest number of Fortune 500 headquarters based on their respective populations than any two cities in the country.

Back then Birmingham and Omaha had more Fortune 500 headquarters than a handful of much larger metro areas. Back in 2003 Birmingham had the following Fortune 500 headquarters (in no particular order)...

1) Healthsouth Corporation
2) Caremark Corporation
3) Saks Inc (parent company of Saks 5th Avenue,Off 5th, Parisians, McRaes, and Proffits department stores)
4) Protective Corporation
5) Regions Bank
6) Southtrust Bank
7) AmSouth Bank
8) Compass Bank

In addition to those, you had a Fortune 500 headquarters in Huntsville (SCI Systems) and the 2nd largest video rental company in the country (behind Blockbuster) Movie Gallery which oddly enough was based in Dothan, AL.

Birmingham before the massive consolidation of the banking industry in the 2000s was home to the most Fortune 500 bank headquarters in the entire country, two major Fortune 500 healthcare corporations, and one of the largest retail corporations (Saks Inc)
