I'd say the counter-melt by every other fan base (this thread is a great example) proves unequivocally that a lot of people sure cared a great deal.

Some people cared but not many watched. Even with all their early struggles Alabama averaged 7.12 million viewers per game, Georgia 5.9 despite their going for an unprecedented 3-peat.
