I live in Texas and my 3 kids have told me that at their high school the C students are the ones who end up at Tech. They say the low B, to high C kids from their school who think they are “too good/uppity” for Tech usually end up at OU or Arkansas.

The normal kids who make straight A’s end up at A&M or Texas. The super smart, oddball type kids end up at Rice

At least that is what they have noticed from their high school in a suburb of Dallas.

There are tons of Texas high school graduates with straight A's that don't get into either Texas or A&M. Texas is now Top 6% for general admission and top 2% for engineering and business. I personally know kids that got into Ivy League schools that were turned down at UT. And because the top 6% rule is statewide, you have a LOT of really smart kids from great public schools (in DFW think of HP, Woodrow, Townview, Hillcrest, Pascal, Pearce, etc.) that would have been auto-admit in my generation that now go to SEC schools. I'd love to see a comparison of the percentage of Texas kids going to SEC schools today versus 20 years ago - I'd be willing to bet it is at minimum a 50% increase.
