Impressed that Or Miss had their impressive streak when there were only a handful of bowls. Depressed that we haven’t matched it in an era where everyone basically goes bowling every year.

Yea Alabama and OMs run back then is very impressive. Prestige mattered a lot more then too, bowl selection was very inconsistent. OM in 1960 went 5-5-1 but still made a bowl and finished ranked 20th in coaches poll.

Southern teams had a bit of an advantage because most all of the bowls back then were in their back yard.

None of the "attempted" bowls during that Ole Miss stretch outside the south, Texas or California made it. Liberty Bowl moved to Memphis during that time.

In those days bowls needed to make sure that at least one team's fans would show up.

Furthermore, until 1975 neither the Big 10 nor the Pac 10 teams were available for the bowls besides the Rose.

the Bowl situation was a pretty sweet deal in those days for the SEC. Especially when you throw in the limited number of conference games the league played in those days.
