You're arguing that it's better to pay Player A for a year where he voluntarily does not play rather than pay for another Player who might contribute on the field. If NIL dollars aren't spent toward production then yes that is the definition of waste. Basic Economics.

How dumb is your logic

Only one team wins each player. Literally, 100% of the players bought are "overpaid".
You. Cannot. Avoid. It.

UGA and Bama have figured out the secret.
You cannot overpay for 22 starting positions.

All players are bought now. So by your logic all 22 players are overpaid whether they be on Bama, GA., or any other team

My argument:

You are the old man arguing at the clouds.

You are the communist college student asking how CEOs get golden parachutes without the basic understanding that I laid out when striving to be the "best" in the obviously limited market of competing to hire the best.

UGA and Bama are not bidding on players who are selling their services to the highest bidder.

You can't overpay the market when you never step foot in that marketplace.

UGA and Bama have a scale. Just like the NFL teams and the draft. The second a recruit takes their scale to another school to up the offer, Bama and UGA are stepping away from that recruit until that recruit steps back to the "scale".
There are exceptions. But they are literal one offs (UGA upped a bid on a few players this class. But I still don't think we landed the highest bid. But it is rare to even see us in that game).

UGA (and Bama I presume) are in the retention market.
When players who have proven the ability to be coached and play well, they are getting bids from competing schools. UGA (and Bama I presume) will match the offers (overpay) that they choose to match.

Occasionally, you will see a UGA wide receiver or DL leave. The players' attitude can impact the willingness to be the top bidder.
Do you want to reward shitty attitude? Even for a talented player? Or let him walk and kill his NFL development elsewhere?
