Bennett is actually the perfect example to disprove your point. He was at UGA as a walk-on. Didn't play a snap as a freshman. Transferred to JUCO when Fields committed. He was headed to be a Ragin Cajun until Fields transferred. He was offered a scholarship and returned to UGA as a backup.

Had he had the "it" factor as a true freshman, he likely would have been offered a scholly to keep him from transferring. If he had the "it" factor in JUCO as a starter, he would have been offered better jobs than a directional school in LA. His familiarity with UGA system, potential for growth, and timing, luck and opportunity gave him a shot to return to UGA and wait for his shot. He was arguably much more developed by the time he took over at UGA. But it likely wasn't something that was evident when he first stepped on campus.
