Claiming and Awarded are completely different. Anyone can claim something if it wasn’t AWARDED. Georgia in 1942 is an example. Does UGA have a legit claim to it? Yes. But just because you have a case does not mean it’s nationally recognized.

Yeah the AP is a Poll. College football was played 60 years prior to its existence. The AP had nor has governing authority. It hosts no championship. It’s comprised of sportswriters and it wasn’t the first or even the most prominent poll until well into the 1950’s. It damn sure had no more significance than any other polls in the early 1940’s.
UGA had the best record, UGA had the heisman trophy winner, UGA won the Rose Bowl, and had a better resume by every metric than OSU. UGA was named NC by 8 of 13 recognized services of the time. They left for war. When they were all gathered again in 1946, they were the only undefeated untied team in the country.

I'll talk to you. You, at least can have a conversation without twisting somebody's words.
You are correct. Claimining and Awarded is two different things. But we were the consensus champions in 1942. We were awarded the title by the majority of services that named/awarded titles. That is my whole point.
quote:Not sure what you mean...Nationally recognized. We were consensus champions. There were more services that thought we were champions than anyone else, so yes, we were and are nationally recognized. If your point is we did not participate in a title game, then all titles prior to 1992. Then you must argue with those who argue that if it was not a game between #1 and #2 do not count.
But just because you have a case does not mean it’s nationally recognized.
That would knock out 1994, 1996,1997. Point is this. There have always been a number of ways the country has named a national Title winner and a bunch of different methods have been used. Nobody can say definitively which method is the be all, do all.
Some say AP Poll. Some say BCS. Some say #1 vs. #2. You will have a multitude of differing opinions as to the correct method. But if the majority of selectors name a team National Champion, that is as legit as any other.
