going to a zone when getting torched from 3 is not a good plan.

Certainly not typically. But I would at least rather throw a few wrinkles and try something different to get a team out of their rhythm when we are that outmatched by athletic guards. Zone isn't great against the 3 but when every ball handler on the other team is beating the man to man easily causing your entire defense to break down, I'd be willing to try and see if they could shoot over it.

Bottom line is our guards this year are just limited in terms of individual defensive ability and we don't have a strong defensive front court to make up for it either. Not a ton Oats can do, but I think he could switch up the defensive strategy a bit more at times. Maybe he has tried zone at practice and it's been a complete disaster. Who knows.

This team is just not good defensively. They don’t use leverage very well, they don’t slide to stay in front very well, they get picked way too easily - whether on the ball or chasing off the ball, they don’t read and react quick enough to get steals, they turn and watch the guy driving the ball causing them to lose track of their man, and they are slow to the ball on loose balls and long rebounds….some of it at times is effort, and some of it is just lack of skill. The biggest reason why these things are issues is because of how obvious they are against the best teams. If Bama wants to compete for national titles they’ve got to improve drastically there.
