With the benefit of hindsight Shula looks like the Pittman hire for Arkansas. You didn't hire him to work miracles, you hired him to simply stop the bleeding. And he pulled that off. Folks got mad at him for not being the next great super coach, but the next great super coach wasn't going to take the job at that point.

I feel like this is its own category, the stop-gap/glorified interim coach. Shula, Pittman, Matt Luke, Arnett, fit this mold, and truthfully probably Derek Dooley, where like you said not be great but just to keep from totally bottoming out at the time bc no one of note was going to touch you.
