I’m playing around with an 8 game concept that has promise, but I wanted some feedback before I try to create the puzzle.

Three Pods

SEC West
Alabama
Auburn
LSU
Ole Miss
Miss State

SEC East
Tennessee
Auburn
Florida
Vanderbilt
Kentucky

SEC New Teams
Arkansas
South Carolina
Texas A&M
Missouri
Oklahoma
Texas

SEC EAST & SEC WEST SCHEDULE
Play your Pod (4)
Play your Perm (1)
Rotate 3 teams

SEC NEW TEAMS SCHEDULE
Play your Pod (5)
Rotate 3 teams

LSU Example
Alabama
Auburn
Ole Miss
Miss State
Perm: Florida
+ Rotation
Y1 Kentucky, Texas, Arkansas
Y2 Tennessee, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt
Y3 Georgia, A&M, Missouri
Y4 Kentucky, Texas, Arkansas
Y5 Tennessee, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt
Y6 Georgia, A&M, South Carolina

Done correctly, all original SEC 10 would play at least 6 of their 8 games each year against the original 10 members.

Just an idea.. what are your thoughts?

eta: The problem with this schedule imo is equality across schedules. There are 8 teams that have won a NC in the last 25 years.. LSU would be playing 4 or 5 every year.

Texas would be playing 3 + 2 rivalry games in A&M and Arkansas, but that might be considered not fair. I think these types of issues is why the 1+7 model is favored by some teams.

Complicated but has some virtues RE maintained rivalries. You don't quite seem to have the clear divisions to have clear division champions and therefore ccg participants.

I'll propose the alternative pod scenario next post.

Northwest:
Oklahoma (Alabama, Georgia, LSU)
Texas (Tennessee, Florida, A&M)
Arkansas (Auburn, Kentucky, OM)
Missouri (Vanderbilt, USC, MSU)

Southwest:
LSU (Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida)
A&M (Texas, Auburn, Georgia)
Ole Miss (Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky)
MSU (Missouri, Vanderbilt, USC)

Central:
Alabama (Florida, LSU, OU)
Tennessee (Kentucky, Texas, OM)
Auburn (Georgia, A&M, Arkansas)
Vanderbilt (USC, MSU, MU)

Coastal:
Florida (LSU, Alabama, Texas)
Georgia (A&M, Auburn, Oklahoma)
Kentucky (OM, Arkansas, Tennessee)
South Carolina (MSU, Missouri, Vanderbilt)

You play your pod + another pod and a similar quality team. Two pods are a functional division = two clean divisions each year for the ccg.

For example this might mean for LSU
Years 1&2:
A&M, OM, MSU, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama
Years 3&4:
A&M, OM, MSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Florida
Years 5&6
A&M, OM, MSU, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, USC, Oklahoma

Yes. It (or an equivalent Auburn/Georgia and Alabama/Tennessee) is also sacrificed with the 1-7

You can switch Auburn and Kentucky to lose Alabama and Auburn instead.

Whichever you choose to sacrifice you can at least play them two thirds of the time (like LSU/Alabama and LSU/Florida) with the pod option instead of the 1-7

IMO, this is the best 8 game schedule short term.

It’s exactly like the current schedule, except you play Texas or Oklahoma instead of a rotating teams from the other division.

It is not a long term solution, but it bridges the gap until we can play 9 or 10 games. Even if it lasted 6 years, you are only missing 1 game against those other teams.

SEC can expand to 20 teams and preserve all rivalries, bring everyone's rival into the conference, and have a 10 game conference schedule. It would be the best and most entertaining schedule in the nation, as well as the most difficult. No one in the nation could touch it, and all the teams are regional. Only exception would be Auburn and Fla, they have so many rivals they actually end up with 11 SEC games. Easy fix is to make their game count as an OOC game. Yet it still gets played.

Send Mizzou packing. New SEC teams are OU, Texas, Ok St, Miami, FSU, Clemson, Ga Tech.

Top 10 teams in this graphic are the SEC West, bottom 10 are SEC East.

B = bye or OOC game.

Yeah. Not perfect but better than anything else proposed

FWIW it should only flip after every two years, not every year. Because you don't want to screw up the home and away (that is otherwise every time most teams played Oklahoma or Texas it would either always be on the road or always at home

20 is the perfect amount, I agree

Here is the format I like with 10 SEC games.

Play everyone home and home every 6 years.
This is perfection imo.

This is domination in all 3 sports.

yes, we know.. Tennessee wants to play Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Missouri and South Carolina every year..

Perhaps your should go to a different conference if you don’t like pods.. pods are coming at 20 teams..

I know for me and many football season is almost over, but it will be 1-7 or 3-6.
1-7 loses Auburn/UGA and Bama/UT playing every year, but we will stil play 2 years out of 4.
