It's a Mikvah (ritual cleansing not baptism) and one of the central tenants of Hasidic, Orthodox, and Conservative Judaism.

Great point Awestruck. Mikvah (what Christians call being baptized) was what John was as doing outside of the religious hierarchy. He came in the spirit of Elijah to come prior to the Messiah Jesus. To cleanse and restore the exterior body and soul for a re-birth.
