Once upon a time in the recent past a head football coach could make or break your entire future as a player and professional. Picking your college to play was a 4 year commitment and you were stuck with it once you showed up. This empowered the coach and staff to develop you or bury you on the depth chart and essentially end your career. The coach held all the cards and you had to do fear him. this allowed to dictate the culture of the team, what would or would not be tolerated. This allowed a coach to make examples out of people without fear that 20% of the players would just say screw it i'm quitting. They were stuck and they had to bow to the king's wishes.

Fast forward to today with the NIL/Portal empowering players to have significant leverage over their coaches and in some cases programs (high level players). This is not to mention making these college athletes professional paid athletes has been a significant paradigm shift. Gone are the days of the coach having dictatorial power over players. If the player isn't coddled, he can transfer some place where he will be paid more and treated better. Thats the reality of the game now - these are professional immature players who have God complexes and often are highly self centered. The coaches hands are tied by the portal to large extent and the bench or wraith of the coach is no longer feared or significant.

This I believe is the core problem with the team. Sure we have a Bad this or that but in the old days saban would have raged and suspended threated etc people into line. Now hes a soft man trying to now scare off most the team which I would venture by his actions he feels like they need to be coddled or they will transfer.

NIL and the portal doesn't have dick to do with stupid penalties, getting physically dominated and missing wide open receivers.

It's attention to detail and discipline that this team lacks.

Alabama recruits well. The roster is loaded. Alabama has done well in transfer portal and very few transfers out amounted to anything.

Alabama’s problem is brain drain. Nick Saban is struggling to find guys who can implement his program and he doesn’t have the fire to push the hires to realize their potential.

You do know Saban is one of the coaches who is doing well with NIL and the portal? Y'all are freaking out over 4 bad games (2 games from last season). Things are working out.

Exactly. We've taken the NFL locker room culture where the players have all the power, and put it in college football.

I made a thread recently about how this is going to have the effect of MASSIVE fluctuations from year to year. It allows a team to load up from the portal, and make a run, and then lose it all the next year.

College football is no longer possible to dominate how we once did, and it levels the playing field.

It's a game of free agency now, and the players on the team have almost no attachment to the school or tradition. They're just wearing the jerseys in hopes of getting paid. It sucks.

Your exactly right. And it makes it harder for cns to be a disciplinarian. It's kinda like the NBA where the players have all the leverage and the coaches have to walk on egg shells trying to keep his players happy or they will leave.

We had a starting o-lineman leave this off-season because he wanted more money. Everyone wanted the players to get paid well this is what it looks like. NFL minor league.

And Alabama signs players from Texas, Florida, Louisiana, California, etc., in hopes of winning games and championships.

The fans and coaches would rather sign mercenaries from other states and win than Alabama kids who grew up with Bama posters on their wall and lose. The players would rather go somewhere that helps their future rather than whatever program they grew up a fan of.

What's the frickin' difference?
