They're not.
A lot of the media are northeast blowhards who pretend they are relevant though.
Notre dame got in the playoff after getting completely blown out they day before. Says it all.

Big Ten schools are gigantic schools. Good schools with rich alumni.
Maybe they aren't as rabid about college football as the South, but they don't need to be to have sway for TV contracts, which are frankly better than the SEC's.

To be fair, there was no better option for the 4th team.
