I don’t think where college football is going will arrive anywhere that can sustain it. There needs to be significant guardrails on the implications of NIL or the free market in college football talent will lead to an even larger separation between haves and have-nots. Very likely with even fewer haves too. This will ultimately lead to fan disengagement in the sport as the competitive imbalance causes folks to tap out.

College football is not the NFL where the sport has an element of stars inducing interest in addition to local fandom. College football fans are the fans of their schools not the players. Their support of the players is contingent on their donning the “correct” colors. Nobody is going to follow the 5-star who got bought by Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, etc. When second tier can’t compete for talent enough to get their fair share of wins against the blue bloods, those fans are gonna deemphasize football in their weekend plans.
