Not really. If they played the game, won, and were named national champions, then they played for a national championship. Much like when A&M lost the Cotton Bowl to Notre Dame to finish with one loss. The fact that you discount the era of bowl games deciding titles but will trumpet 2007 LSU is hilarious. The final AP poll was released prior to 1939 A&M playing their bowl game.
