Bama won the 1978 UPI title because it was awarded BEFORE its bowl game loss

What? Alabama beat then #1 Penn State 14-7 in the Sugar Bowl in 1978.

My bad. 1973 was the year.

Bama wins undeserved title in 1964 because it lost its bowl game… AP changes in 1965 to awarding its champ after the bowls.

Bama wins undeserved title in 1973 because it lost its bowl game… UPI changes in 1974 to awarding its champ after the bowls.

Then in 1978 Bama shared the title with USC despite the Trojans massacring the Tide at Legion Field.

Sure ‘66 and ‘77 Bama teams might have been deserving, but Bama has won 3 titles it really had no business winning. And that doesn’t include the 5 retroactive titles claimed 50 years after the fact.
