Those rules suck. Bama lost to Texas in a bowl game. Arkansas went undefeated and won their bowl game. They also beat Texas. Bama owns the AP title that year but it’s completely undeserved.

USC won the AP title because the AP changed its ways after the 1964 debacle and awarded its trophy AFTER the bowl games. Bama won the 1978 UPI title because it was awarded BEFORE its bowl game loss. An absolute scandal that caused them too to change its timing of awarding trophies until after bowl games.
Basically 2 of Bama’s titles (the ones they actually won and didn’t invent) were undeserved and were so scandalous that the rewarding institutions changed their rules the very next season because they made a mistake.

Bowl games did not hold the same weight in 1964 as they do now. They were seen as exhibition games to reward players for a good season rather than as games that actually mattered. There's a reason why schools such as Notre Dame habitually declined bowl invitations until they started counting toward the national championship picture.

What? Alabama beat then #1 Penn State 14-7 in the Sugar Bowl in 1978.

Alabama won the AP national title in 1978, bruh. USC won the UPI despite Alabama having more first place votes.
