That's horrible. Prayers to his family and friends.

Just read where Peyton Hillis nearly died earlier this year saving his two kids from drowning as a result of a rip current. Also found out that one of my friend's childhood friends died from drowning five days ago on the Florida Gulf Coast.

I've lived just outside of Gulf Shores the past 15 years and while you hear of the occasional drowning every now and then they typically happen in very rough surf conditions. Unfortunately once ever few years or so you get a spring and summer season where the rip currents are really bad down her and this year has been one of the worst in a long time along the northern Gulf Coast. Rip currents are particularly scary because they a lot of the most dangerous rip current conditions occur in seemingly normal looking surf conditions.

We live just up the road in Spanish Fort, rip currents have been a problem this year. I believe I read something like 10 people have drowned in the last 2 weeks. Tragedy for the families

I had no idea how bad it's been down there this year. There have been 11 fatalities from rip currents along the NW Florida and Alabama Gulf Coast in the past two weeks alone.
