The fact that Auburn wasn't awarded the 1983 national championship is the reason using national championships pre-1998 as a barometer for success is a bit silly. It was part-merit, part-popularity contest.

Thems the rules. And all that Pat Dye left the barn of real significance was his signature on the football field.
