Saban spoke about the Tide being left out of last year's playoff and revealed that he's not sold the current system actually selects the four best teams.

"So, all we do is take the teams that win the most games at the end of the year, put them in the playoffs," Saban said. "But do you really get the best teams?

"When they told me that we would be favored against three out of the four teams that got in the playoff, I’m like, why aren’t we in the playoffs?”

Alabama lost just two games last season, but both came in heartbreaking fashion. The Tide fell to the Tennessee Volunteers on a last-second field goal and later in the year, lost to LSU by one point in overtime.

"Does that mean they have a better team [than us],” Saban asked, likely referring to Ohio State, TCU and/or Michigan - the three teams ranked ahead of Alabama in the final CFP rankings last season.

"Or does it mean that those people don’t know what they’re talking about? I really don’t know that. But I’m not being critical of anybody. But if you’re going to have parity, you have to have a better way of figuring out who has the best teams."

Look, Alabama didn't deserve to be in the CFP last season because they didn't get it done. They blew it on the field when they still controlled their own destiny.

But what he's inferring is correct. There is not one person who can claim (with a straight face) that TCU was a better team than Alabama, or probably even multiple other teams in this conference.

His actual talking point here is that we need to stop trying to give every other conference a participation trophy in this thing.

If multiple SEC teams "should" get in, they should get in.

Auburn was better than Alabama in 2017 and they won a NC without winning their division.

Didn't hear him complaining then.

What he's getting at is that because bama is "better" than TCU that bama should've been in the playoffs instead of TCU. Which is absolutely not correct.

I mostly agree with this, but it's only getting worse since we're going to 12 and I'm sure eventaully at some point 16+ team playoffs. Everyone with a pulse is getting in.

I just don't agree, as it stands with a 4 team playoff. What is the point of having a reulgar season if multple lsoses and winning nothing of consequence at all doesn't have any penalties as a result? IF you can lose 2 games, not win your division, and still make the playoffs...what's the point of even trying in the regular season?

Betting lines shouldn't determine playoff spots, sorry. What happens on the field should be what gets you in. Betting lines should be just that, for betting. And maybe it can be factored into strength of schedule, but even that can be misleading because injuries happen, causing teams to be weaker and stronger at different points of the season. But it shouldn't be criteria for earning playoff spots and ignore what happens on the field. Otherwise why are we even playing?

Besides the point, Bama wasn't some dominant team last year. If a team with a different name and jersey color posted the exact same results as Bama they wouldn't be hypothetically favored over as many teams as Bama supposedly would have, a large part of that is from name brand alone. TCU played better in Austin against Texas than Bama did. They were a play away from losing to A&M and Ole Miss even gave them some trouble. It's not like they were crushing good teams all year and just had a slip up along the way

I get that, but he never said a word when his team was being selected. He could have said something the year Georgia was not picked to be in it, but he didn't. It just looks bad to complain only when it affects your team.

(Don't misunderstand. The year we came close but did not make it...we did not deserve to go. But I can admit it. Saban apparently can't) Simply put, based upon Alabama's performance on the field last year, Alabama was not the 4th best team in the country.
