The SEC tourney and the softball super regionals will be over this afternoon and it will be time for me to watch a good war movie, which I do every Memorial Day weekend. My go to movie is definitely Patton (I'm reluctantly excluding Band of Brothers because it's not a movie).

Whenever I watch it I'm reminded of an Alabama - LSU game played on television some time after the movie came out in 1970. Back then they still showed at least some of the halftime show. The LSU band formed a giant tank on the field and started playing the catchy theme from Patton which was cool enough, but then the tank treads started rolling and the entire tank rolled down the field. It gave me chills then and still does even typing this. Best halftime performance I ever saw. I have zero memory of the game but will never forget that tank rolling down the field.

So hats off to all on here who served and hats off to the Golden Band from Tigerland.

Happy Memorial Day ranters, and what war movie would you pick?

1. It isn’t Memorial Day

2. There’s nothing “happy” about Memorial Day

I've been thinking I want to check out the Midway movie made in 2019. I read it tries to stay close to the events.

"Despite some of the 'Hollywood' aspects, this is still the most realistic movie about naval combat ever made," NHHC director and retired Navy Rear Adm. Sam Cox told the U.S. Department of Defense's website. "It does real credit to the courage and sacrifice of those who fought in the battle on both sides."

Stalag 17 was a good one, although it was focused on POWs in WW2 rather than the war itself.

We were soldiers
Fury
Black Hawk Down
Heartbreak Ridge
The Covenant
Lone Survivor
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
Full Metal Jacket
The Patriot

Are all my favorites. Black Hawk Down and the Covenant (just came out and is phenomenal) are probably my favorites but that’s mostly due to my time in Afghanistan.

For me it would either be “The Great Edcape” or “Pork Chop Hill”
