Building The Battery and moving out to Smyrna was a franchise altering decision for the Braves. The revenue generated from The Battery is why they've been able to expand their payroll so much. It also got them out of the ghetto.

This is true as rain...I suspect average attendance is up slightly as well due to the proximity of the fan base which can afford to attend MLB games today. That being said Summerhill (the area around Turner Field) wasn't notoriously dangerous, not by major inner city neighborhood standards. The area was also going through a significant change, called gentrification by some and progress by others, but by any name was becoming a popular area for young professionals. Not the Braves or anyone's other than area residents concern of course but the Braves leaving that area has left a void that may well set the area back significantly.
