I need to prove to someone at work, that if Texas Tech doesn't lose, the NC will probably be Texas Tech and Florida (if Florida wins). He said, it will be number one and two (meaning Texas and Texas Tech). Has there ever been a year when the NC wasn't the number one and two ranked teams playing? Regardless I think Florida would jump Texas.

Yes LSU vs OU '2003, also Florida jumped #2 Michigan two years ago when Michigan was done.

Well there can't be two teams from the same conference in the NCG. So you have Florida vs. Texas Tech. Texas would probably be taken by the Fiesta(BCS & BCS), Sugar(BCS & BCS) or Cotton Bowl(Big 12 & SEC) committee to play USC, Penn St or Bama.
