Haven't looked but wouldn't the Vanderbilt Foundation or whoever it was that started Vanderbilt be the largest to Vanderbilt if you look at it in today's dollars?

Vanderbilt gave 1 million to change the name of the university, Duke did the same at Duke. Too bad Sewanee did not get the same.

Vanderbilt was rough as a cobb and never actually went to the state, just donated it sight unseen to help his robber barron image which was pretty bad during his lifetime. Based on some stories he was more like the Bill Cutty character in "Gangs of New York"
