Receiving that text changes the situation. It goes from “picking up my friend” to “delivering a gun to someone where there’s objective reason to believe it could use it in the commission of a crime.”

Clearly. So it completely makes sense, since they already had a planned pickup time and location ("hey, pick me up at 1:38 and park in that same spot you always do where it looks like you trying to block traffic, lol"), that his buddy would text him that he needed the gun that that BM didn't even know was in the car that was already on its way to pick him up.
