Pistol scored like a madman, but didn't make the NCAA tourney once. It was more like a sideshow at a carnival, come watch Pete score.

Dale built teams that contended with Kentucky for the SEC title regularly, and was in the NCAA tournament almost every season. Multiple Final Fours. 17-1 conference record and a 1 seed entering the tournament in 81.
That's worth a nod and a mention, considering the rest of LSU's history.

For football, yes, easily. He got Tiger Stadium built, using funding intended for student housing (that's why the stadium had dorms in it).
Basketball and other sports, not so much.

LSU football also benefitted from WWL being a Clear Channel station. LSU played at night, and WWL could be picked up over a large region of the country-

I've heard older people say they listened to LSU games in St Louis, in the 50's.
Again, that wasn't so helpful to basketball, other than overall name recognition of the university.
