It’s not a huge splash hire but I am ok with that. Bama’s best years were with non-premier coordinators like McElwain, etc. Frankly I think we need a return to a team that relies on defense more than offense. Its not that I want the offense to fail, just one that complements the defense.

Saban doesn't make splash hires. Kiffin and Sark were seen as rehab projects coaching wise. Nobody knew how Daboll would do. Nobody cared about Locksley when he was promoted. Now every single one of those guys is a head coach. May be time to give Saban the benefit of the doubt.

With McElwain Bama was still just crushing teams with the running game and some play action.
