For most 1st Round NFL draft picks by a head coach.

If we consider players drafted after a season the coach in question was at the helm (IE, players drafted in 2016 would be credited to Mark Richt), then here are the all-time numbers:

Quay Walker
Devonte Wyatt
Lewis Cine

Jim Donnan: 5
1998

I know. That was my first thought when digging this list up too. There is the caveat that the whole USFL thing was going on while he was in his best years of coaching, but even that wouldn’t have boosted numbers too terribly much.

Speaks to his coaching ability and the insane impact of Herschel Walker that the team that only lost three games in three years from 80-82 only had ONE first-round pick.

Yeah I knew that Herschel and probably a few others would be missing from the list for that reason, but over a 25 year career only having 4 is just absurdly low.

We have five legitimate potential first round picks this year so that shouldn't be an issue.

Carter will go in the top 5. Brod Jones will probably go in the top 15. Darnell, Ringo, and Nolan Smith are also first round candidates.

I think Ringo is a 1st round lock.

Obviously Herschel and probably Freddie
Gilbert go in the 1st if they didn't go the USFL along with Jake Scott if he didn't get pissed and go to the CFL.
Still a relatively low number though.

It was a different CFB world back in the 70's, 80's and even in to the 90's.
You could actually contend for a NC even if your team wasn't loaded with NFL prospects. Now it's impossible

Can't believe Terry Hoage wasn't a 1st rounder.

Shoulda been along with Guy McIntyre but there were also lots of very good Dooley players back then that made all SEC and even AA teams that had little chance of making it in the NFL.Knox Culpeper,Tommy Thurston,Bill Krug,John Little all come mind.

Different world now
