Gates has obviously done a great job at Missouri, last night not withstanding, as they appear to have a real chance at making the NCAA Tournament with a roster of transfers coming off of a 12-21 (5-13) season.

What about Mike White at Georgia? Took over a program that went 6-26 (1-17), added some nice transfers and is sitting at 12-4 (2-1) with a real shot at getting close to .500 in the league and playing some NIT home games.

Chris Jans' Mississippi State team and McMahon's LSU team got off to hot starts, but it has become clear in the last few weeks those hot starts were almost entirely based on playing very bad competition.

Todd Golden's Florida team is the definition of average - 1-7 vs Q1/Q2 teams and 8-0 vs Q3/Q4 teams. Nothing awful, nothing real good. Considering he took over a stable program and was able to add some nice transfers, seems like a bit of an underachievement.

Lamont Paris and South Carolina beat Clemson at home and won at Rupp. Those were good wins. No reason to discuss anything else.

Still 12-13 conference games left to turn things around or fall apart, but so far some interesting returns.

It’s too early. We are 3 games deep in conference play.

And halfway through the overall season with 2 months of non-conference play to look at. You can form an opinion of a team and a coaching job to date after 16 games, especially in comparison to the previously coached teams at their school.

Earlier in the year, I was probably most surprised by Jans.

Right now, I'd lean White — don't tell Diddlers — but in fairness, their overall schedule has been atrocious.

Torvik has us going 9-9 in conference which would be incredible. At the same time I think the ceiling is 11-7 with the floor at 6-12.

We have a pretty friendly schedule. Looking at it now, I’d say our road games at Bama, Tennessee, and Arkansas (end of season) are the only ones we don’t have much of a chance in

It has not been good - but they've already won home games against Auburn and State, and if you look at the rest of the schedule......there is a very reasonable path to 9-9 for them.

Home - Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Kentucky, LSU, Florida
Away - South Carolina

Those are all very winnable games for them. They almost luck into the fact that the teams they will really struggle with are on the road and almost throw away losses (Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas) while they get all the more toss-up level games at home. And they will have a fighting chance in road games @ Ole Miss, Kentucky and A&M.

Missouri will be feast or famine playing that offense all year (heavy reliance on the 3 ball), but will be fun to watch. I wish my Aggies could average over 80 a game.

A&M is playing good ball right now. They seem to have flipped a switch after that awful Wofford loss. They should be 13-5 (5-0) when they head to Kentucky/Auburn in 10 days.

Honestly, I've been a little surprised with how well A&M has played at times this year.

Right now they're looking like a top-half team in the league.

Will be interesting to see how they come out of that Florida/Kentucky/Auburn/Arkansas stretch.

I agree, that's why I said overall schedule.

Georgia certainly appears to be overachieving at the moment.

Which is all the more shocking considering their terrible backcourt.

Hoe.

The answer is Mike White by a wide margin. In his first season, a year removed from the worst team in UGA history, he has built the best roster in Athens since Harrick.

You will talk about SEC Conference PPG leader Terry Roberts with respect, or you will not speak at all

I dunno about that - Fox had a pretty good roster in the mid-2010s with Gaines/Mann/Thornton/Frazier/Maten.

But adding Roberts was a big move. He's a very good offensive player.

Horrible take. Georgia’s backcourt dominated Auburn and won the Miss State game.

That was meant for Diddlers.

He knows how bad they really are.
