The blocked field goal during the SEC Championship game, question?

I wont pretend to know what all happens during practices, but wouldnt they have meetings to describe little known rules? Particularly on special teams? Questions like it must go 10 yards before the kickoff team can touch an onside kick, you have to call a fair catch or catch a kickoff if its in the field of play........and a field goal is a live ball.
22 kids standing around and it took a Georgia player looking at the sidelines with coaches screaming to pick it up for someone to do the right thing.

One of the coaches was in the booth signaling not to pick it up. So it looks like even some coaches aren't clear on the rule.
And then you had Gary Danielson saying if the ball comes to a complete stop, it is a dead ball (regardless of a whistle blow). I've never heard that, but he may be right.

Coach was probably more worried he'd get tackled before he even made it back to LOS.
Sort of like telling a kid to drop a 4th down INT when they chuck it 30 yards downfield

Football can be a confusing game. When I first saw it I thought you could not return it either. Hell, I remember being confused during Kick 6.

Depends on your ST coordinator/analyst. One that I know has a 20+ minute “Situations” tape that has returning blocked FGs, the North Texas punt return TD vs Arkansas, Randall Cobb putting a foot out of bounds to draw a flag when returning a KO, etc.
That’s a big reason why KJ Britt was able to return a FG for a touchdown one year. But it’s all up to your staff. Special Teams titles get thrown on as an “additional duty” a lot so not a ton of those guys know the deep ins and outs.

shite like Leon Lett is why they teach you to get tf away from it. But, there were only UGA guys around it, he's fast, and he had a fricking caravan down the sideline...

Leon sliding in feet first with 3 Dolphins players surrounding him was stupid.
UGA speedster grabbing ball while entire LSU team is headed for the bench on the other side of the field was smart.

There is a funny as hell story about that on some Dallas Cowboys documentary.
Guy says he comes into the locker room later that week and Leon is sitting at his locker looking at fan mail, and he is all depressed almost in tears. He says Leon dont let some fans get you down and he hands him a letter and says read this one.
Its from some girl telling him not to get down about that play, anyone could make that mistake, its certainly not as dumb as some player in the superbowl who ran back a play for a touchdown and held the ball out hotdogging and a player from the other team came up behind him and took it out of his hand.......that player was also Leon
