The Big 10 and Notre Dame have historically always gotten the benefit of the doubt regarding sports team.
Check out how many BIG 10 teams get into NCAA Tournament. 80% usually get bounced out first round.. but that doesn't change a thing.

The Big Ten's last NC in basketball was MSU in 2000
Notre Dame's last NC in football was 1988
They may get the benefit of the doubt, but I think they are using them as a punchline
