OK let me come at it this way … and I’ll say up front I don’t know Sokoloff from Adam’s house cat, have no clue about his background and skills and track record.

He burns this source, nobody will ever talk to him again.

And I'll counter...
He doesn't burn the source. Why should we care what he writes ever again?
quote:

But what if he comes across some information that YOU would like to know, but he can’t verify or confirm it because he’s now reviled as the guy who burns his sources?

A bad journalist hurts the profession.
"What ifs" don't change that.
Let the good journalists (or young journalists) learn from his costly mistake and carry the flag moving forward.
quote:

And don’t play the “we can just wait until the official announcement” card because that denies human nature too, and if people were willing to just wait for the official announcement on things places like this wouldn’t exist LOL.

I don't know what this means.
Not sure I care.
Bad journalism is bad. For everyone (consumers, other journalists, and the subject of the content).

Edit to add: the lesson may be for the bad sources. Be bad, look bad publicly. There is too much shite being flung at the walls of twitter.

We are closer on this than you think, I was posing some devil's advocate stuff.

The paragraph you didn't understand is in response to those who say the press shouldn't try to see what's going on before any official announcements, that we should wait for the official announcements.

I absolutely detest bad journalism. I also don't think journalists should reveal their sources to the public. But at the same time, they better be f'ing sure of their sources before they go with something. If they worked for me, there better be no doubt whatsoever ... and again, I have to know who the source is, as Sokoloff's superiors should've known before signing off on letting him run this ... or your arse is fired if you and we get burned.

And let me add this, although I don't think it's the situation here. Sometimes sources give you good stuff but caca changes.

Case in point, in December 1980 a lot of papers in Alabama wrote that Vince Dooley was going to go to Auburn. Of course they ended up hiring Pat Dye.

I can only imagine the fun this place would've had with that, but the thing is Dooley was coming. He absolutely had told Auburn "Mama's calling and I'm coming home." But then either he got cold feet or Georgia sweetened the pot or Barbara talked him out of it, but he changed his mind and stayed in Athens.

Of course the newspapers that ran he was coming looked bad, but the information was not bad, caca just changed. So you sweep up the debris and move on.
