I think it boils down to how hard it is to keep a bunch of kids playing at peak focus and intensity all season. Any SEC team can beat you if you slip and we’re all placing our hopes and dreams on a bunch of college students. Then you add all of the outside influences telling them how great they are, how much they suck, etc. Those influences definitely affect their play.

How many times have we seen a team jump up by 21 in the first half and then slack off and get beaten or challenged? That’s all attitude and focus.

Peak Saban is the best I ever saw at keeping everyone clicking through an entire season.

And, yet, Saban has "shite the bed" once or twice almost every season he's ever coached.

He's "only" had two undefeated seasons, one in a Covid shortened year.
