It is this way of thinking that got FSU where they are now because they let Bowden stay on way too long. If Saban runs out the string without competitive seasons then the best recruits will stop committing. Once the talent level drops without excellent coaching and development, then the entire program will begin drifting into mediocrity which will in turn lead to the better coaches turning down jobs as HC,OC, DC etc.

I agree that Saban has earned the right to decide when it is time to retire, but if he doesn’t recognize that the program is in decline and isn’t working every day to fix it, then Byrne should step in before we get to the point that we have poor talent and poor coaching and become Nebraska or FSU.

Have to also take into account that a shitload of people will be without a job the moment CNS steps down. Not just football coaches but a huge support staff.
I remember an interview with joepa later in his career and he said he thought about those things when he contemplated retirement earlier.

For example, you have a secretary for 15-30 years. You see that person have kids and grandkids and as you get older, things like that start to play louder in your head. Just sayin

If you are referring to Tom Osborn’s run at Nebraska, he was the HC from 73-97 and won 3 National Championships (94,95, &97), not sure how retiring in the same year you win a championship is indicative of poor talent and coaching. Bowden won 2 national championships and retired a decade after his last one. While the comparison between him and Saban isn’t even close, I would agree we don’t want to go through that, I just don’t believe Saban would stay if he wasn’t successful and making a National Championship appearance every 3-4 years.
