He initially retired as both coach and AD with the intention of running for governor, but when he learned that opposition research was a thing in politics, he asked to stay on as AD.
He averaged 8-wins per season. He retired two years ahead of Spurrier taking over at Florida. Maybe he would have kept up the 8-win pace, but it might have fallen off.
