What makes you believe DJ Durkin can build an elite defense when he’s been below average his entire career?

I had doubts (and still do) about Durkin as the replacement for Elko. My hope is that our talent on defense will overcome any coaching deficiencies. Not a good plan but it worked in 2019 for LSU with Orgeron and staff. Hope is never a good plan and when it goes south, it goes downhill in a hurry.

Aranda was still here in 2019. We had talent + one of the best defensive coaches in the country, it just took a while to come together.

Maybe it’s my bias over what recently happened with LSU but “talent overcoming coaching” was the thought process when we went from Aranda to Pelini and everyone saw how that worked out. We went from being ranked 40th overall and a lockdown defense through the last 5 games, to 128th in scoring and one of the worst defenses in CFB history even with Stingley and Ricks at CB and a lot of talent elsewhere.

I think the offenses right now are so technically advanced that there’s no amount of talent that can overcome mediocre coaching and game planning. We’ll see but that’s my take and I don’t see Durkin coming into the SEC and suddenly fielding a top 25 defense when he’s never done it before
