There's also a line out there that "Gig'em" was/is also used to indicate a demerit on an inspection in the Corps, ie, one guy was doing the inspecting and asking a note taker to record the infraction.

Could be that this usage came after the TCU thing, and the term was just a general "Get him" kind of thing.

Could be that this is completely made up. The origins of some of the traditions have gotten somewhat opaque over the years.

This is what I have always heard. It is my favorite Aggie tradition.
