The combination of Alabama/Tennessee, Georgia/Auburn and 2-3 other games has absolutely driven that decision in the past and is one of the things driving that conversation now, yes.
Alabama/Tennessee as the ESPN night game outdraws every other ESPN game in the country during 2021 outside of Alabama/LSU. The argument that "nobody cares about it" is silly. It's not a marquee, Top 10 national game anymore but it's also always going to draw more eyes in than Alabama vs "insert random non-big 6 SEC team here" given the same channel and time.

It was just a “Bama” game. That brought in the eyeballs. There is nothing special about Bama/Ut in terms of outside viewers.
Bama vs A&M would get more viewers on ESPN
Bama vs Arky would get the same as BAma vs UT on espn
