I actually prefer the 1&7 approach. But that is not happening.

The networks want more product. So they get an extra conference game that way. They also keep some annual rivalries that matter. BAMA/Auburn, Auburn/Georgia, Florida/Georgia, BAMA/Tennessee, texas/OU, A&M/texas,A&M/LSU, texas/Arkansa,LSU/Ole Miss, egg bowl etc... nobody cares about Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina, MSU or Missouri - so you have a lot of ways to fill in that 3rd game or make sure everyone gets one permanent that isn't brutal.

Not sure why you say that it's not happening. The blurbs I've read make it sound like there are plenty of schools pushing to keep it at 8.
