For some reason Drinkwitz is going after 2023 JUCO players super early in the process.

Any other coaches doing this?

I'm thinking he just wants to get the spots filled in the meantime while we are waiting for the high ranked kids to decide.

It's just a little different than what I've seen, looking for insight

Relying heavily on Jucos was always a bit dangerous as they usually need a year to adjust and you really don’t know how they are going to adjust.

With the transfer portal, you can address needs with more proven players.

Not to say that I wouldn’t sign any Jucos, but heavily relying on Jucos as a strategy doesn’t seem like the best approach to team building imo.

Probably trying to balance out the classes a little bit more.

I don’t understand going after JUCO players when the transfer portal is so prevalent. Especially Thai early. Weird tbh, my guess is missouri doesn’t have the financial backing to deal with high school kids (ole miss doesn’t either) and maybe going after JUCO because they are cheaper

I’m not sure who specifically OP is referring to, I haven’t been following recruiting as closely with how insane the portal’s gotten. But I know we just got a commit from a JUCO kid who was listed as ‘23, but is going to reclassify to ‘22. So maybe that would explain it

Are jucos all that different from NIL transfers? 2 or 3 years to play. Usually when the transfer comes from a good program, it is because they weren't playing. Seems like as much of an unknown as trying to translate a Juco player's performance to P5.

Yes, way different IMO.

Most transfers coming into a P5 program have at least one year of game film going against D1 athletes, even if they were not starters. These guys also get D1 weight training and coaching so they are better prepared. You have a pretty decent idea of what you are getting and when they’ll be able to help.

Juco produces some good players, but the quality of competition, training, and coaching can take awhile to adjust to and even then you aren’t real sure what you are getting.

As an example —- Ole Miss’s transfer class included guys that were borderline starters, starters, or even all conference selections at SMU, USC, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, MSU, etc. I think those guys are much more of a sure thing than a class made up of starters from Blinn, EMCC, Itawamba, etc.

Yeah I’d think the only top level players going the JUCO route these days are the guys that are absolutely failing on the academic side and can’t get in anywhere.

Drinkwitz just signed one, apparently reclassifying to 22 though. May only be a pwo and has to prove scholarship-worthy.

right, but that was 22. I wasn't aware any 23 kids are being targeted.
