Holy shite.
Seems they are basically aiming only at teachers, coaches, social workers, and aviation now. They won't even have a biology, mathematics, history, or music degree program any longer.
This is nuts.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State University on Monday announced deep cuts to their undergraduate degree programs.
The plan revealed by Chancellor Chuck Ambrose would do away with many of the undergraduate programs and save the school almost $5.5 million through 2024.
The programs affected will be history, geography, political science, public administration, social science, criminal justice, early childhood development, consumer sciences, human services, biology, radiology, chemistry, mathematics, nuclear medicine technology, medical lab science, studio art, art education, communication, theatre arts, English, Spanish, and music.
According to the plan, students currently enrolled in those degree programs, or set to enroll in the fall of 2022, will be able to finish their chosen degrees at the university.
The plan revealed would also cut 88 jobs of the 67 filled and 21 currently unfilled positions, 56 of which are tenured professors.
The cuts have been rumored for a few months now.
The cuts will not be final until they go before the Arkansas State University System Board on Thursday for a vote at 10 a.m., according to the Arkansas Times.

I bet colleges throughout the country will be doing this.

Why so many stem cuts and not liberal arts?

I don't remember enough to comment much, but I seem to remember some shenanigans going on there financially in past years

Looking at some of the degree cuts, I'm glad because that's less radical left lunatic fricks teaching things like history and political science and public administration and etc
ETA: less radical fricks teaching early childhood development.... Good!

It comes down to money. The programs being cut actually lose money and have been propped up by other areas for years. Some of the programs should have been phased out sooner honestly.
*edit* for context, I'm in a unique position to know what's going on with this and why decisions are being made. It's not great but the previous HSU administration horribly mismanaged the university and enrollment dropped significantly after covid. Just a perfect storm.

I am going to be an a-hole here, well I'm always an a-hole, and say... we have too many colleges for too small a state. This sort of thing is sadly going to happen during times like this. Like everything else higher academics doesn't bounce back right away from the 100 year plague. We are over leveraged as far as universities in this state and until things bounce back we're going to have to tighten our belts.
I feel horrible for those let go. This is an awful time to be a scholar looking for a job. I have close friends in the profession and folks all around the country are being laid off right now. Not just little old HSU, but major universities are quietly not extending professors contracts.

Henderson State is one of those state schools I forget we even have. I agree we have too many state colleges for a small state.
SAU and Henderson are better off being glorified technical centers and churning out teachers and nurses than anything else. Maybe add in trades-related programs.
No meaningful research funding should be spent at either place.

well, you maybe, since you're going to pretend you don't know about debauched radicals taking over as university professors for the past half a century

You aren't wrong. Universities are overleveraged. HSU has added enormous amounts of long-term debt over the past decade. The previous admin built new dorms and on-campus apartments that, frankly, weren't needed.
Also, they did a poor job of being strategic with scholarships. This led to less tuition money coming in AND poorer student retention. I still don't understand how they've faced zero consequences for their incompetence.
