Looks like there is finally a plan (still work to do)on the old mall which has slowly died like most malls.

Continued growth but they will have do something about the traffic this will cause around that very congested intersection.

You know to be honest rail from campus all the way down to maybe 78 on Atlanta Highway would not be a bad idea. Especially if this is going to have shops, etc kind of like Avalon in Alpharetta.

Think about how that would open up access from Campus and probably reduce some traffic.

And no I am not some bleeding heart "eco" guy who wants to save the environment with Light rail.
Just think I bet it would get used a lot by students wanting to go to Target, Athens Church, Alps Bridge area, this new facility etc.

Not sure why anyone would assume this. A light rail is a simple solution to mitigating traffic and providing efficient public transit.

As long as you are going from point A to point B.

But most people would have to go from point A to point B, rail to C, then somehow get to point D. And back again. All efficiency is lost.

Need only look at Gwinnett Place and the various plans that have been presented over time for that project.

With so much raw infrastructure in place, these do make ideal housing locations. They should do apartments and have a direct route that only stops downtown for public transport.

The “worker housing” will be the bank required stuff.

They also need to get some type of quality employer base in the mix. It can’t just be all apartments and retail.

Manufacturing is mostly, and ever increasingly overseas, and domestic office work is mostly done from home now.

I agree with you about retail though. It already was retail and failed. Just let it be housing.

They should turn it into a 55 acre solar farm that would completely power the neighboring Pep Boys.

It’s been years since I’ve lived in Athens, but doesn’t downtown have a mini Target now?

Actually these kind of Multi- use areas are big now. There is a new one about to open up by downtown Watkinsville called Wire Park, restaurants, retail and even Oconees first Microbrewery.

I think they do something like that there it would do quite well.

They were cool at first. Problem is they're now a dime a dozen. Every town from Athens to Atlanta to Blue Ridge has one popping up. They're becoming the new mini malls.
