The answer is money not rivalries. Texas would gladly forgo playing A&M if the price is right. Now they get both.

Texas A&M – along with Missouri – created an historic, cultural, and geographic "bridge" for adding Texas and Oklahoma down the road. Keep in mind, these 4 schools have Big8/Big12/SWC rivalries that go back a century
The SEC already has our own historic rivalries.
Athletic prowess notwithstanding, no one asked for a cultural bridge with the Southwest Conference and the Big Eight.
To suggest that this somehow makes the SEC culturally better demonstrates the arrogance of the "Texases" of the world that most of us wish to avoid.

And a lot of Oklahoma and Missouri fans didn't want to expand the Big 8, but times changed... If the SEC hadn't expanded West with A&M/MU/OU/UT then another conference would have, and that wouldn't bode well for the league's interests down the road.

You do get some good rivalries back (UT/A&M, Ark/UT, OU/Miz) and some that will become instant rivals. (Ark/OU, LSU/UT). That SW division will be ugly among fans. LSU and Texas fans mingle a lot and this will get ugly fast I promise you. I can imagine the same for Arkansas and OU.

Very little sports history with each other, but there's already hate. I can't stand most OU fans.

In what world would that be? Alabama owns those bragging rights.

Aggie about to go back to lil bro status once Texas starts playing them again.

The SEC would have had major problems if it remained at 12 as other leagues expanded. There's no do-overs in conference realignment. If the SEC had said "no thanks" to A&M and those schools had joined the PAC-16 instead, things would be a lot different.
Again, a lot of Oklahoma and Missouri fans didn't want to expand the Big 8, but times changed. You can either adapt, or get left behind in the dust.
Thankfully, Mike Slive chose the former.

Apart from Colorado, I'm not sure any other Big 12 states are actually gaining population other than Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma.
The SEC did good from a demographic/market standpoint. Texas is about to pass 30 million people. That's nuts.

I think it’s bc LSU sports probably won’t exist anymore.

The SEC was fine with what it had before 2012
The SEC was winning national titles in almost all sports and so expanding west (or east) really did not matter
What it did do is put 2 (now 4) more schools at the money plate. I will agree that there will be more money in that plate, but the SEC was doing alright with the amount they were getting before.
How many NC have the four new schools won in the last 25 years? I know of only 2 in football, none in basketball, 2 in baseball (SEC has won 7 NC in baseball since 2009)

This is a really well thought out and nuanced post. But this:
Is debatable.

LSU is very relevant in Texas among Aggies and Longhorns. It will be a natural rivalry, just like Aggy/LSU.
OU is also very relevant in Texas, which will give the OU/LSU rivalry and instant start.
LSU
Like it or not (I don't)
Is the lynchpin to SEC expansion into these "western" states.

Being right on the AR/OU border, there may not be a huge rivalry there yet, but I have tons of OU friends who are going to hate AR fans pretty soon if we have some success against them.
Will definitely be a instant rivalry. Norman becomes the closest school to Fayetteville I believe also, right at 250 miles away.

The SEC would have added Oklahoma and Texas 10 years ago but both were flirting with the Pac back then. Texas always looked down its nose at the SEC and prided itself on it own brand which it feels is unequaled in college sports.
Over the past 10 years they watched as A&M's brand grew and began to rival them. All of a sudden being the top fish in the little pond wasnt enough. They swallowed their pride and followed A&M to the SEC when they asked to join.
A&M, Ark, Mo, and USCe have been solid additions and have adapted to the SEC culture. No one tried to rock the boat. That is about to change.
